Should I buy a newer used car now or wait?

Posted on 29 Jul 2011 at 3:31pm

I currently have a 2006 Nissan Frontier Truck. It’s a 4 cylinder and I pretty much hate it everything about it. It only gets 15-20 mpg which is horrible for a 4 cylinder. It doesn’t have much room on the inside and you practically have to floor board it if you want to pass someone going more than 45mph. The good side is it only has 55k miles on it, and I only owe on it for another year and it will be paid for. The major downside is it’s in the shop right now though and it will cost a little over 1k to fix it (steering wheel bearings are stripped) and it needs new tires which is another $500 at least. This is the 3rd thing that has went wrong with it mechanically in the past year.

I am thinking about buying a used 2006 Toyota 4Runner or a 2007 Chevy Tahoe. They both have about the same amount of miles as my truck has and my car payment will be the same or less than what I am paying now. Both of them also have all the options that I want. The Kelley Blue Book value on my truck is $7,800, and I am already pre-approved to finance a new car at 4% APR because I have really good credit for my age. I don’t have anything to put down so I am planning on trading my truck in towards the new car.

I am having a really hard time deciding if I should pay to have it fixed and keep it hoping nothing else goes wrong with it. (If I do that I am planning on saving up for a few years after it’s paid off and buying a a low mileage used 4runner or tahoe.) Or should I just trade my truck in to the dealership I want to buy from so all the repair costs are their problem. If I did that I could trade it in for something that I like and is more reliable, but I will be stuck with a car payment for 5 more years. If I do trade it for what I want I am planning on keeping the car I get for at least 8-10 years. I have no idea what to do and the part for my truck will be in within the next few days. What should I do? Please help!

This link shows the reliability ratings for all three cars.

Oh yeah and I already checked with my insurance company and the two vehicles I am looking at will cost the same to insure as the truck I have now.

2012 Ford Focus Hatchback Titanium… In White?

Posted on 27 Jul 2011 at 1:52am

Hey everyone,

I am looking at the new 2012 ford focus. it is a really awesome car.

What do you think of it in the white platinum metallic tri-coat? It is $495 extra.

Now there are some amazing looking cars in white (ie Audi R8… !!)

But what do you think of the focus in that white metallic color? I just dont want it to look like just another blahhh white car. I really liked the sterling gray but none of them have the features I really want (sport suspension, 18″ wheels, myford touch, satellite radio, smartkey)

Thanks!

How reliable is a 2011 Mazda 3 compared to 2011 Honda Civic?

Posted on 06 Feb 2011 at 6:35pm

I believe that Honda are the most reliable car, well I own one, its a 1989 LX with 160k miles on it still running great, no major problems, just have to change oil every 3 months or 3000miles and change transmission fluid every 6 months.

So basically its a 22yr old car, but still running great, its just, I need more performance. 1989 Civic LX only have 92HP! Driving it nowadays in highway is a pain in the ass when merging, specially when the speed limit is 65mph.

But driving it on a 50mph speed limit is still ok, but not on 65 or 70mph hi-way. Also I need a new car cause on summer, Im planning to drive to different states so, I need a new car.

Im leaning towards the Mazda 3, because its sporty, I have no doubt, that when I test drove this two car, Mazda is the winner, and its driving experience is far far from the Civic.

Im just a little bit concerned on the reliability of the Mazda 3, because I want to keep the car for a long time, like 10-15 yrs. I take care of car so its not an issue. Just look at my Honda Civic its 22yrs old and is still running great.

So going back to the question, what are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

2011 Hyundai Elantra or 2011 Honda Civic?

Posted on 06 Feb 2011 at 5:35pm

Both cars are what others call it “boring” because its not a sport car. Now the Elantra was better on gas, power, style, features.

So the only question is, RELIABILITY, does the Hyundai can match the Honda?

This is my first car that Im going to buy brand new, my car right now was old and was a gift from a friend. Im also considering the Mazda 3 s Sport hatchback, but its my last option, because of poor gas mileage.

Honda Civic is rated 26mpg city, Hyundai Elantra was rated 29mpg city. 3 miles difference is almost my one way travel to work, I travel 4miles one way.

My concern is should I pick the Civic because it is established as a very reliable car? Or is the Elantra worth it because its better on gas, and it is not far reliable than Hondas? not to mention it has an advantage of 8 more HP…I hope for your unbiased and knowledgeable answers. Thanks!
